Fillings

After decay is removed from a tooth, something must be placed in that space to give strength back to the tooth. At King St. Dental Wellness Center we only use metal-free restorations as metal-based (“silver”/mercury/ amalgam) fillings weaken teeth, very often leading to cracked teeth. In addition, metal-based fillings are an aesthetic compromise.

White fillings are cosmetically matched to look like your natural tooth. They are stronger and safer than “silver” fillings and they are healthier for your mouth and your body. There are two options:

  • Composite Fillings
  • Porcelain Inlay/Onlay

Composite Fillings

These tooth colored resin fillings have replaced silver/mercury/amalgam fillings and have advanced to state-of-the-art status as the material of choice for small cavities or to replace small existing amalgam fillings. They are not a permanent solution, usually lasting 5 to 10 years. They are beautiful, durable, BPA free and take only one visit to place.

Composite fillings are made of a strong composite resin that is matched to the surrounding tooth color.

These tooth colored resin fillings have replaced silver/mercury/amalgam fillings and have advanced to state-of-the-art status as the material of choice for small cavities or to replace small existing amalgam fillings.

Advantages:

  • Natural appearance
  • Take only one visit to place
  • BPA free
  • Good alternative to mercury fillings

Disadvantage:

  • Usually last 5 to 10 years

Porcelain Inlay/Onlay

A porcelain inlay or onlay is used when the cavity is too big for a composite filling, but isn’t large enough to require a crown. An inlay is a filling within the cusp tips of the tooth. Onlays (also known as overlays) will overlay one or more cusps in order to protect and strengthen the tooth. These restorations are fabricated in a dental lab and are designed to fit precisely in the tooth.
